A focused evaluation, not ongoing therapy

A clinical evaluation is a defined, one-time service. The purpose is to independently assess the presenting concern and provide findings and recommendations based upon the information available at the time of the evaluation.

Each evaluation may include:

  • Standardized clinical assessment measures

  • Review of relevant history and presenting concerns

  • Review of referral, legal, or other supporting documentation when applicable

  • Individual clinical interview

  • Clinical interpretation of assessment findings

  • Written evaluation and recommendations

  • Completion of a referring party's evaluation form or template when appropriate

The specific assessment measures used are selected according to the purpose of the evaluation.

Currently Available

Adult Anger Management Evaluation

Anger can be expressed in very different ways. An evaluation looks beyond the presence of conflict or a single incident to examine the severity and pattern of anger, emotional reactivity, relevant behavioral patterns, and other factors that may be contributing to the concern.

The Adult Anger Management Evaluation uses a standardized measure of clinical anger along with a clinical interview and review of relevant history and documentation. Additional clinical measures may be administered when appropriate to assess factors such as stress, anxiety, mood, alcohol use, emotional regulation, trauma symptoms, and relevant behavioral patterns.

An evaluation may be appropriate when:

  • An attorney, court, probation officer, employer, or other professional has requested an anger evaluation.

  • A specific incident has raised concerns about anger or emotional regulation.

  • There is a question about whether a broader pattern of anger-related difficulty is present.

  • Clinical recommendations regarding treatment or intervention are needed.

Adult Trauma & PTSD Evaluation

Experiencing a traumatic event does not automatically mean that someone has developed Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. A trauma evaluation examines the nature and severity of current trauma-related symptoms, their effect on functioning, and whether the available clinical information supports a trauma-related diagnosis.

The evaluation includes a clinical interview, relevant history, and standardized assessment of trauma-related symptoms. Additional measures may be used when appropriate to assess depression, anxiety, stress, dissociation, emotional regulation, and other factors that may help clarify the clinical picture.

An evaluation may be appropriate when:

  • An attorney, victim-services professional, employer, or other professional has requested documentation of current trauma-related symptoms.

  • PTSD or another trauma-related condition has been raised as a clinical concern.

  • There is a need to distinguish trauma-related symptoms from anxiety, depression, stress, or other conditions.

  • Clinical recommendations regarding treatment are needed.

General Adult Mental Health Evaluation

Sometimes the referral question is broader than a single diagnosis or clinical concern. A General Adult Mental Health Evaluation provides a focused assessment of current emotional, behavioral, and psychological functioning to determine whether clinically significant mental-health concerns are present and whether further evaluation or treatment is indicated.

The evaluation begins with a clinical interview and review of relevant history and documentation. Standardized clinical measures are then selected according to the referral question and information obtained during the evaluation. Assessment may examine areas such as depression, anxiety, stress, trauma-related symptoms, emotional regulation, personality functioning, dissociation, alcohol use, and other clinically relevant concerns.

An evaluation may be appropriate when:

  • An attorney, court, probation officer, employer, or other professional has requested a general mental-health evaluation.

  • The referral question is not limited to one specific diagnosis or condition.

  • There are questions about whether current symptoms represent a clinically significant mental-health concern.

  • Clinical recommendations regarding treatment, additional assessment, or other intervention are needed.

The Evaluation Includes

Standardized Assessment

Validated clinical assessment measures are selected based on the purpose of the evaluation and the referral question. Measures may assess anger severity and expression, emotional and behavioral functioning, stress, mood, anxiety, substance use, trauma-related symptoms, and other clinically relevant factors. Assessment results are interpreted alongside the clinical interview, available records, and other relevant information rather than used as stand-alone findings.

Clinical Interview
Participate in an individual telehealth interview addressing the presenting concern, relevant incident or referral, history of anger and conflict, current stressors, behavioral patterns, treatment history, and other relevant information.

Document Review
When applicable, relevant documents may be reviewed as part of the evaluation. These may include court documents, attorney referrals, police or incident reports, probation requirements, or information supplied by another referring professional.

Written Findings & Recommendations
Assessment results, interview findings, and available documentation are considered together. A written evaluation is then completed documenting the clinical findings and recommendations.

When an attorney, court, probation officer, employer, or other referring party provides a required evaluation form or template, it may be completed when appropriate.

What Can Be Recommended

An anger evaluation does not automatically result in a recommendation for anger management treatment.

Depending upon the findings, recommendations may include:

  • No anger-specific intervention indicated

  • Anger management education or programming

  • Individual counseling

  • Additional mental health evaluation or treatment

  • Substance-use evaluation or treatment when indicated

  • Other clinically appropriate services

Recommendations are based upon the evaluation findings rather than the assumption that a referral, charge, or incident necessarily demonstrates a clinical anger problem.
