Originally developed to treat PTSD, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is now used to help people work through a wide range of issues: trauma, anxiety, grief, panic, and the deeply embedded beliefs that often drive them.

At Untangled Mind, EMDR isn’t a stand-alone protocol. It’s part of an integrated system that includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Neuropsychotherapy, allowing us to work from both the top down (your thoughts) and bottom up (your nervous system).

How EMDR Works
EMDR uses a technique called bilateral stimulation—most commonly eye movements, tapping, or tones—to help your brain reprocess distressing memories or beliefs that are stuck in a loop.
This stimulation helps the two hemispheres of your brain communicate effectively, breaking down the emotional intensity of traumatic or painful experiences. It's what founder Francine Shapiro described as reprocessing—or more technically, memory reconsolidation.
Put simply: the brain takes the emotional charge out of the memory, allowing you to keep the story without reliving the pain.

My Approach to EMDR Is Different
Many therapists follow the 8-phase EMDR model exactly—and that’s valid. But even Francine Shapiro noted she would have renamed it Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing to reflect how versatile the method truly is.

I use EMDR not just in reprocessing past trauma but also to help regulate the nervous system, support grief integration, and shift long-held cognitive distortions. It is never used in isolation—it’s woven into your overall treatment plan as part of my Untangled Mind Pathway™, a structured system with measurable outcomes and monthly reassessments.
