What Causes Stress-Related Disorders?
Stress-related disorders can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
-
Trauma: Exposure to a traumatic event such as physical or sexual assault, death or loss of a loved one, natural disasters, or combat can lead to stress-related disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
-
Chronic stress: Prolonged exposure to stressors such as a high-pressure work environment, financial difficulties, or relationship problems can lead to chronic stress, which can contribute to the development of stress-related disorders.
-
Genetics: Some research suggests that certain genetic factors may contribute to an individual's vulnerability to stress-related disorders.
-
Brain chemistry: Imbalances in brain chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine can contribute to developing stress-related disorders.
-
Environmental factors: Growing up in a chaotic or unstable environment, experiencing abuse or neglect, or having a family history of stress-related disorders can all increase the likelihood of developing these conditions.
What Does Counseling Look Like for Adults with Trauma, Grief & Stress-Related Disorders?
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a highly effective form of counseling that can help individuals manage symptoms of stress-related disorders. I offer CBT counseling for adults with stress-related disorders to help them identify and change destructive thought patterns and behaviors contributing to their distress.
In our counseling sessions, I work with clients to understand the underlying causes of their stress-related disorders and develop a personalized treatment plan. I use evidence-based techniques to help clients identify negative thoughts and beliefs and replace them with more positive and realistic ones. I also teach relaxation techniques and coping skills to help clients manage their stress and anxiety. Additionally, exposure therapy is often the best treatment option. Exposure therapy involves confronting the situations that provoke anxiety or fear, while CBT targets the negative thoughts and behaviors associated with stress and anxiety.
